November 2020 Athlete of The Month: Emily Quintanilla!

Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.


Our November 2020 Athlete of The Month is Emily Quintanilla! Emily began her CrossFit journey with us on September 17, 2020. Her consistency, willingness to learn proper form, and determination to improve her health and fitness is something we are very proud of as her coaches and teammates. You will find Emily getting her day started in our Strong Before Dawn class at 5:00 am! Get to know Emily in her interview below. 1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF. I’m 43 yrs old. I’m married and have a 17 yr old daughter and 2 very spoiled weenie dogs. 2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT? I would always go walking in the neighborhood after work and I would see the group working out. I can’t tell you how many times I was asked to come workout with you guys and every time, my answer was the same... oh no, thank you though, I’m good. I might die if I work out with y’all. One day as I was scrolling through Facebook, I saw a post from CrossFit 1710 and it caught my interest. I clicked on it to read more. I ended up going to the CrossFit web page and saw that they offered a week free trial. I was at a point where even though I was walking every day, I did not feel healthy. I was even to the point of getting depressed over certain things in my life. I decided to sign up for the week trial. I didn’t have anything to lose, so why not. I ended up LOVING it and signed up to join! 3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710? Every single movement that we do, can be modified for any fitness level. It’s not about being the fastest or lifting the heaviest weights or how tall your box is..... just do your best and finish, no matter how long it takes you! 4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL? I Love the encouragement and support from everyone. When I’m doing the WOD and it feels like I absolutely can not do anymore, there is ALWAYS someone that will cheer me on, or say I’m doing a good job, or tell me to keep going. Most of the time, that little push, is all I need to hear, to keep me going and get me through the workout. I feel like CrossFit 1710 is family. We’re all here for the same reason and no one is in competition with each other . We all support each other no matter what. 5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSS-FIT MOMENT? My very first set of banded pull-ups. I was so shocked that I was actually up there doing it, that I forgot to even count my reps!! Thank goodness Coach Jodie caught it on video!

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE? My favorite movement is kettle bell swings. Favorite lift, deadlift. Least favorite movement, those dreaded burpees. Least favorite lift, push jerks. 7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM? I look forward to going to the gym 6 days a week. It makes my day so much better when I go. I get up early, work out and go about my daily routine. My body is used to working out like this now. If I don’t start my day at the gym, my body will crave that workout. It’s a stress reliever. I’m so much happier and feel so good when I leave. It makes my day that much better . I feel like I’m a happier person since starting CrossFit. 8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM? My main goal is to be healthy. I’m no where near where I want to be, but definitely on my way. 9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSS-FITTING, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO? Spend time with family and friends. 10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED? Just do it!!! You will not be sorry that you did. CrossFit is for every fitness level and every age group. Everything can be modified just for you! 11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT? I was already watching what I eat for the most part. I’m more conscientious about it now though. My diet could still use some work but I’m more aware of what a cheat meal will do to my body, especially the following day, during the WOD. 12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS! I’ve lost a few pounds but I’ve gained muscle mass in certain areas. I can tell my clothes fit looser I’m certain areas where they used to be snug. The best part is that I’ve gained a ton of confidence in myself. FREEWRITE: Why did I wait so long to do this?!?! I love and appreciate all my CrossFit peeps! Everyone is so encouraging and supportive and has made me feel so welcome. I never thought these words would EVER come out of my mouth, but... I LOVE CROSSFIT!
