Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our May 2019 AOTM is Nicole Adams! Nicole chooses to end her days with us, typically hitting the 5:45 pm class. She may seem a little quiet, but she's super funny and is full of drive, continuously working toward her goals and taking all the right steps to get there. She’s an awesome person to hang out with in and outside of the gym. Come hang out with her and you’ll see why she’s our AOTM! Get to know Nicole in her interview below. Congratulations Nicole! We are thrilled to have you as this month’s Athlete of the Month.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I'm 37 years old and I'm married to my loving and supportive husband, Billy for 7 years and together we have 2 young children, Francesca, 6 and Quitman, 3. I also have a 20 year old daughter, Ava whom I gave life to when I was 17 and we share a very special open adoption. I'm a stay at home mom and property manager for rental properties in Newgulf.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I started CrossFit because I needed an escape. We had been living with my folks for about 2 months because our home got flooded due to Hurricane Harvey and as much as I love my parents and will be forever grateful for them for taking our family in, it was mentally exhausting being displaced; but also because I didn't like my reflection when I looked in the mirror. I nursed my son for a year and that definitely helped shed the weight, but everything was just flabby and my love handles were getting out of control, plus I started to see signs of the dreaded saddle bags. In addition to those things, I was also lacking the energy to play with my kids. I knew I had to do something. I had seen Jodie Hutchinson's Facebook posts and her incredible journey with CrossFit so I reached out to her and got some amazing feedback. I think it took me about 2 months to build up enough courage to drive 7 miles to the box for my first class, and that my friends was the first day of the rest of my life.....although it actually felt like it was the last day of my life.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
Nothing is impossible, and not everyone will understand your journey and that's okay. I've learned that some people have zero couth when commenting on ones appearance. But, mostly I've learned that you have to trust the process.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I enjoy the camaraderie the most. I also enjoy the adult interaction after spending most days with only a 3 year old. I like that CrossFit is a 'wam bam thank you ma'am' workout. I get in and I get out so that I can get right back to my family, and I'm held accountable.....by encouraging words nonetheless.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
I actually have two proudest moments to date at the box. Toes to bar and kipping pull up.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
My favorite movement would have to be lunges, my least favorite are wall balls and wall walks. My favorite lift is the back squat and my least favorite would be deadlift and overhead squat.
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
Oh my gosh! CrossFit has changed my life!! In addition to being physically healthier my mental health is so much better as well. I'm definitely not as bitchy as I used to be and I have a great deal of energy now.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
My goals are to continue to get stronger without becoming too masculine. LOL
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
I love spending time outdoors with my family enjoying nature.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
Just show up.
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
I try to be relatively conscience about my diet because everything that I eat affects my complexion. I hardly ever eat anything fried. I limit my dairy intake, very little cheese and only Greek yogurt with granola maybe a few times a month. I substitute coconut oil and avocado oil for butter, and I very rarely eat sweets unless it's a special occasion and then sometimes I go nuts. I've cut down on carbs substantially, but I do indulge from time to time. I eat eggs, frozen mango, trail mix, apples and peanut butter, hummus with red bell pepper, spinach, kale, fish, chicken, salami, and avocados, just to name a few things. However, for supper I usually eat whatever I prepare for my family. Since starting CrossFit I've also reduced my alcohol consumption considerably and I only really drink water and coffee. If there's something that I really want, I don't usually deprive myself, I just eat it in moderation. I still have an addiction to lightly salted pringles and spicy nacho chips. They are the devil!
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
What can I say? Honestly, the results are incredible! I don't even recognize the person in the mirror now.

Never in a million years did I think I would be doing CrossFit, but I am so grateful for CrossFit 1710 and the friendships that I've established. I'm definitely setting a better example to my kids on how important physical fitness is and I think it's super cool when they ask what I did at the box. Also, there is absolutely NO WAY I could do any of this without the support from my husband. Last but not least, a huge THANK YOU to Jason and Andrea for creating such a wonderful environment to decompress.
