March 2021 Athlete of The Month: Jeanette Koenig!

cch month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.

Our March 2021 Athlete of The Month is Jeanette Koenig! Jeanette began her CrossFit journey with us on February 7, 2020. Her consistency and determination to improve her health and fitness is something we are very proud of as her coaches and teammates. You will find Jeanette getting her workout in for the day in our 5:00a Strong Before Dawn class or our 4:30p CrossFit class! Come and join Jeanette in a workout and you too will see what she is talking about and why she's our AOTM! Congratulations Jeanette! We’re so happy to have you as our March 2021 Athlete of the Month and as an awesome athlete in our community! Get to know Jeanette in her interview below.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

I’m 46 years old. My husband, Greg, and I have been married for 25 years. We have a beautiful daughter and an awesome grandson! I teach special needs students at Wharton High School. I’m a very social person and outgoing person. I enjoy being goofy and having a good time.

2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

I’ve always enjoyed working out. I joined CrossFit because I didn’t feel like the group classes at the gym were challenging me, but I need a group setting with someone telling me what to do and pushing me.

3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?

I learned I can actually do 110 burpees and not die! Lol. Seriously though, I’ve learned I can do more than I ever thought I could do. I’ve learned it’s truly more mental than physical.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

I enjoy how encouraging everyone is to each other and how everyone truly wants to see others succeed. I’ve enjoyed watching people achieve goals. I’m not one to show emotions other than laughter, but I’ve almost wanted to cry a couple times (happy tears) watching someone accomplish something they never thought they could and seeing the joy it gave them.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

I don’t remember what the lift is called that I was doing. I was struggling to get the bar over my head and locked out. It was only 75 lbs, but it was hard for me. Everyone was cheering. I was pushing as hard as I could and I finally got it up! It just made me so happy!!

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?

I actually like burpees! I don’t care much for pull-ups, because I find it difficult to hold onto the bar. I’m not about the blisters and calluses on my hands! Ha Ha

7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

I’m definitely stronger than I was before. Being more fit in general has helped me in so many ways with my job and my life. I can truly enjoy things with my grandchild that a lot of grandparents can’t physically do. It also makes me happy when I come workout ☺. It’s just good for the soul!

8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

I would like to trim down some of my chubby…I’m not that far out of whack yet. I know this is due mostly to diet rather than exercise. I would love to be able to do one unassisted pull-up and bench press 100 lbs.

9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

I love spending time with friends and family. I like to travel, experience new places and things, read, play games and do puzzles. I’m also a bit of a thrill seeker, so hang gliding is on my to-do list.

10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?

CrossFit is for every fitness level! People tend to assume you have to be in great shape to do CrossFit. Also, don’t compare yourself to others…do it for you and see the difference and achievements in yourself.

11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?

My diet is absolutely terrible!! I haven’t changed my diet, but CrossFit has me at least contemplating trying to change it. I honestly, don’t know where to start. I’ve never eaten healthy and I’m not sure I actually know what a “healthy” diet looks like. The other issue is…I don’t cook.

12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!

I’m stronger than I’ve ever been and I have more stamina. My body has also started to become more sculpted.
