June 2022 Athlete of the Month: Stacey Silvas

Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.

Our June 2022 Athlete of The Month is Stacey Silvas! Stacey originally began CrossFitting with us on July 22, 2021 and has made incredible gains in the past year. Stacey has challenged herself to improve her cardiovascular training and running. We are incredibly proud of the effort Stacey shows every single class and know that this is only the beginning of her fitness journey! You will find Stacey working out alongside her daughter and grandchildren at our afternoon classes. Come and join Stacey in a workout and you too will see what she is talking about and why she's our AOTM! Congratulations Stacey! We’re so happy to have you as our June 2022 Athlete of the Month and as wonderful example of what CrossFit culture is all about! Get to know Stacey in her interview below.

1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF (PERSONAL BACKGROUND: FAMILY, CAREER, HOBBIES).

My name is Stacey Silvas. I have been married for 38 years. I have two grown kids and four grandkids. I am also an RN by trade.

2. WHEN DID YOU BEGIN CROSSFIT? WHO/WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO START CROSSFIT?

My daughter Shannon Haltom goes to CrossFit 1710 and she kept encouraging me that I could do it. My first workout was her home. My fear was that I would not be able to complete the exercise or would be too slow.

3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED ABOUT YOURSELF SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?

I have learned that I am stronger than I thought. I am able to complete the exercise for that day even though the weight or other activities are modified for me to meet me at the level I am at.

4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

I enjoy the people and the atmosphere of encouragement no matter what level you are at.

5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

I have had several of these moments: coming back to CrossFit after breaking my wrist and having surgery to repair it; learning how to jump rope; and participating in the Murph workout.

6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT?

I can honestly say that I do not have a favorite movement, but my least favorite would be box steps and lunges.

7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

Increased strength and resolve both inside and outside of the gym.

8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

When I first came to CrossFit 1710 my main goal was to make it through the exercise. My long term goal is to maintain good physical and mental health.

9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

When I am not at CrossFit 1710 I can usually be found keeping my grandkids.

10. WHAT IS THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?

If you are thinking about starting an exercise program, come give CrossFit a try. You will find encouragement and a workout scaled (modified) just for you.

11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?

My diet has not really changed as far as what I eat, but I have incorporated more fresh fruits and smaller portions. I still enjoy ice-cream!

12. RESULTS! TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!

My results have been an increase in muscle tone and strength, more than actual weight loss.

FREEWRITE (WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE OTHERS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US AT CROSSFIT 1710):

I want to say thank you to everyone who has encouraged and supported me on this journey including Jason and Jodie for their support and encouragement to try new things. I am super excited about the new gym and can’t wait to have our first workout there.
