February 2020 Athlete of The Month: Dustin Frankum!

Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.
Our February 2020 Athlete of The Month is Dustin Frankum! Dustin has been an athlete with us since December 29th, 2019. His CrossFit journey began with his wife Amanda and himself signing up for a free week trial as a Christmas gift. In just six weeks Dustin has made amazing gains in his health and fitness journey! Your're hard work is paying off in the gym and in the arena! Dustin greets us with a big smile and is always ready to put in work! You'll find Dustin in our 5:00am and/or 4:45pm class! 1. TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.
I’m 38, married to Amanda for 18 years and we have three boys, Brody (16), Coy (13) and Brant (11). They youth rodeo so we stay busy hauling them and all that goes with it. I work for Enterprise Products as a pipeline technician. I enjoy steer roping and compete as often as possible.
2. WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?
I lost all motivation in my health and fitness journey and was looking for something to re-energize me. I was noticing with age came aches and pains that were slowing me down in competition. Amanda and I had the same idea of joining cross fit after seeing friends post on social media. We decided that was our Christmas gift to each other and we haven’t look back.
3. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?
That even though you can’t breathe, you won’t die. I thought my little workouts I did on my own was really making a difference until we joined and saw the benefit of working out with a group and coach. Jason really keeps you motivated in the workouts and pushes you to do what he knows you can. That makes me want to keep coming back.
4. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CORSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?
I like pushing myself to what feels like a breaking point and then a little but further. I really enjoy that me and Amanda are doing this together.
5. WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?
Completing a workout in the required time frame.
6. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT? LEAST FAVORITE?
Squats. I’ve never been able to do pull ups, so building up to doing that unassisted is a goal. There isn’t really a move I don’t like because I want to challenge myself even as bad as I hate a burpee, I still want to do one more than last time..
7. WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?
I have definitely felt the range of motion is back.. I also had some personal best in the arena since starting CrossFit and feel stronger/faster already.
8. WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?
Main goal is get back down to where I was two years ago. I want to be stronger/faster and have the self confidence back..
9. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?
I’m really focusing on my roping.
10. THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?
Do it and don’t quit, don’t think about it just jump in.
11. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?
Slowly getting back to clean eating, definitely better since starting CrossFit.
12. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!
You get out what you put in, just like everything else. I really thought I knew what I was doing until I joined up. The results I’ve seen in 6 weeks at 1710 would have taken me 6 months by myself.

I don’t know if all CrossFit gyms are like 1710 or not but I can tell you there is a comradery that is priceless. You don’t ever have to worry about quitting during a workout because they won’t let you. This team and Jason will pick you up and make every move with you to see you finish.
