January 2024 Athlete of the Month: Miosha Taylor

Each month we spotlight a different CrossFit 1710 athlete who stands out and shows just how awesome they are. What is it that makes up an Athlete of the Month? It may not be the person that finishes the fastest, Rx’s every WOD, or gets a PR every time they walk in the gym. Although we love and celebrate when those things happen, the Athlete of the Month is made up of much more than physical ability. This person shows up, gives their best every time, and then gives a little more. They are hungry to learn and always ready to do the work. They support their fellow athletes and encourage them to reach their goals. This athlete embodies what we believe the CrossFit 1710 Community should be about.

Our January 2024 Athlete of The Month is Miosha Taylor! Miosha began her CrossFit journey with us on June 25, 2023. Over the past 7 months Miosha has improved her endurance, mobility, and strength!  She now begins her day in our 5am class to get in a good workout before taking care of her four kids and several children in our community. Prioritizing her physical and mental health first thing in the morning prepares Miosha and so many more of our athletes to take on whatever the day brings! We are incredibly proud of you Miosha and know this is just the beginning of growth as you pursue becoming the best version of you possible!

Get to know Miosha in her interview below.

1.    TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Miosha Taylor. I am 31 years young and was born and raised in Wharton, Texas. I have been working in childcare for over a decade and am currently the assistant director at Small Blessings. I am also a mother to 4 outstanding young men: Jayden (16), Jerren (13), Jaxton (7) and Justin (4). They keep me busy with football, baseball, track, powerlifting, and basketball.

2.    WHAT MADE YOU START CROSSFIT?

My cousin, Analicia Rojas, would talk to me about CrossFit and how it helped her strengthen her body. She said it changed the way she viewed herself and how she lost weight. Analicia would try to get me to join just to try, but it wasn’t until her mom, Estella Rojas, peer pressured me. 😊

3.    WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED SINCE JOINING CROSSFIT 1710?

I’ve learned I am pretty Strong! I have also learned that failure/failing is okay, but to never quit trying. I have learned different things about myself including that I can really push through tough times, I actually like drinking water, and there are new (healthier) ways to look at what foods I consume.

4.    WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT CROSSFIT 1710 OR CROSSFIT IN GENERAL?

I’ve never attended a gym before. LOL. This is my first, but I enjoy the workouts and the variety of challenges every day. I know we tend to get bored if we do the same thing over and over, so I appreciate the variety. I also enjoy the support of the other athletes, young and old. The support of the coaches really helps too!

5.    WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST CROSSFIT MOMENT?

My proudest moment is SHOWING UP. For one, I never thought I’d be doing anything like this: lifting weights or running for time. The proudest is when I PR (earn a personal record or best), doing an exercise and weight I couldn’t imagine when starting.

6.    WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT?

My favorite exercise right now is deadlift. I feel a little HULK-ish. A close second are kettle bell swings. I enjoy the full body stimulation.

7.    WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOVEMENT/LIFT?

My least favorite movement is burpees, for sure! I don’t know if I’m doing anything to get better, per say, but as I become stronger, flexible, and more confident I feel like I’ve gotten better doing the exercise.

8.    WHAT IMPACT HAS CROSSFIT HAD ON YOUR LIFE IN AND OUT OF THE GYM?

CrossFit has helped me tremendously! I have 4 boys who are very active and keeping up with them could be a hassle. The early morning stimulation helps give me kind of clear my head and get ready for the day, because there is no telling how it’s going to end. Going to the gym has really impacted life outside of CrossFit and helped with everything I do. I eat different, I drink more water, even my kids see the work I put in and it has changed the way they look at their health choices.

9.    WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS AND HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO REACHING THEM?

I honestly don’t have any real goals set. My focus is to keep showing up and stay consistent. Again, these are things I’ve never done before so every day I go to a CrossFit 1710 class is a GOAL achieved in my book. I do hope maybe I can commit in a 5K this year so it will give me something to work toward.

10. WHEN YOU’RE NOT CROSSFITTING WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO?

SLEEP! We do need our rest and recovery. Ha! Seriously, when I’m not crossfitting I’m usually at one of my son’s sporting events being their biggest fan.

11. WHAT IS THE ONE TIP YOU’D GIVE SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT STARTING CROSSFIT OR JUST STARTED?

NIKE! NIKE! NIKE! Just DO IT. This is what I tell everyone that ask me about it. I know it might be hard, but just show up. You CAN do it!

12. WHAT IS YOUR DIET LIKE? HOW HAS IT CHANGED SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?

My diet is not the best but has gotten much better. I have made a huge improvement on eating healthier since I started CrossFit. I found out nutrition is key. I do not meal prep, but I wish I did. I do drink a ton of water and that has helped with curbing my appetite.

13. RESULTS? TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESULTS!

Since starting CrossFit in June 2023 I have felt and seen a difference in my clothing. My energy level has spiked, and I’m not as tired and unmotivated as I once was. I have lost inches on my body, but I yet to step on a scale. LOL 😊

FREEWRITE- Thank you CrossFit 1710 Coaches and athletes for always being so supportive and motivating. Starting CrossFit has truly been life changing. I am so thankful to be a part of CrossFit 1710!
